Françoise Rapp is the lead instructor of International Perfume Fondation for the curriculum of French Natural Perfumery.
Our natural perfumery online curriculum is part of the International Perfume Foundation curriculum. Being certified by the International Perfume Foundation is to be the ambassador of excellence and part of a world growing community and network of professionals defending values of quality and sustainability. This certification program has been specially designed for individuals and professionals alike who are interested in the art, history and science of natural perfumes. This online course provides you with a solid foundation so you can create unique, natural fragrances for yourself, your cosmetics and personal care products. You will explore plant essences, absolutes, macerates and all the plant material you use as a natural perfumer. It promises to be interactive, comprehensive and lively. Think of it as your guided journey into the world of natural perfumery with our renowned expert by your side every step of the way. |
Natural Perfumery Definitions
Natural Perfumes Natural Perfumes are those perfumes that are composed of 100% natural materials. Natural Materials Natural Materials are those materials (flowers, plants, etc) grown using the principles of the New Luxury Code in respecting the environment and workers as well as the avoidance of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) seeds, and using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices including the use of natural pest management, such as biologicals. Certified Natural Perfumers Certified Natural Perfumers are perfumers committed to developing perfumes composed of 100% natural materials. Certified Natural Perfumers sell their own Natural Perfumes online, through a single retail store of their own, or wholesale their Natural Perfumes to retailers. |
BECOME A NATURAL PERFUMER
The following is a French Natural Perfumery intensive course given by Françoise Rapp, French Certified Natural Perfumer, Teacher and Member of The Teacher's Academy, in which you will learn:
WEEK 1 – Introduction to Natural Perfumery
Understanding and discovering the history behind this beautiful art and how to recognise and get familiarised with natural ingredients:
- Natural perfumery history through the major periods and their original recipes, the authentic textures for natural perfumes & other fragrant beauty products
- The olfactory notes and raw material fashions throughout the major historical periods
- Harvest times and plant essences calendar
- The glossary of natural material extraction and its evolution
WEEK 2 – The Olfactory Families
Exploring the various olfactory families and the natural, raw materials dedicated to each one. You will also learn how to adjust and compliment different scents:
- The chypre family
- The floral family
- The fougère family
- The hespéridés family
- The leathery family
- The oriental family
- The woodsy family
- The gourmand family
WEEK 3 – Essences and Natural Isolats
Exploring 40 natural essences, absolutes and concretes:
- Their olfactory and organoleptic classification
- Their technical sheet and biochemical profile
- Their healing properties
- Their perfect (and not so perfect) pairings
- The natural isolats: their place and role in the natural perfumery world – what it is exactly and how is it produced
WEEK 4 – Natural Perfume Structure and Custom Creation
Understanding the differences between natural and classical perfumes and mastering the dos and don’ts of natural perfumery.
WEEKS 5 & 6 – Creation in Action
During these two weeks, you will practice on two designed formulas (fougère and chypre) and one creative natural perfume with your choice of essences. This later serves as the pre-creative work for your final exam. The three formula samples (2ml each) are then sent to Françoise for her personal review and comments, along with any recommendations for modifications.
WEEK 7 – Zoom MasterClass
This week, we will review the seven olfactory families and their adaptation in natural perfumery. Using your natural perfumery essential kit, we will discuss the solutions and the specific essences that may be used to create a variety of notes, such as marine, fruity, sweet, metallic, etc.
WEEK 8 – Zoom MasterClass: Adjusting Your Creation with Different Neutral Bases
This week, you will create your professional fragrance and learn how to adjust the formula according the various neutral bases, including hydrolats, concrete with natural waxes, creams and soaps.
WEEK 9 – Zoom MasterClass: Creative and Technical Challenges Review
When creating a natural perfume, you may face some technical challenges, as while some essences are a perfect match, others are not. In this masterclass, you will learn the tricks and tips to make your natural perfume perfectly balanced and long lasting.
WEEK 10 – Natural Perfumery Examination
This is the week where you get to experience your fragrance in full bloom. You must send your 2ml sample to Françoise with the descriptive concept and objectives of your fragrance. This can be done as a mood board along with a full description of the natural perfume.
This course is an intensive program into Natural Perfumery certification program. This course is part of International Perfume Foundation Curriculum.
